Studies in the history of religion and literature in Rome

The articles in the volume are analyses focusing on chapters of the religion and literature of ancient Rome that are difficult to research due to the lack of reliable sources, including articles examining the religious institutional system of the republican era, the relationship between conquered, unlettered peoples (notably the Celts) and the Roman religious world, as well as those dealing with the adoption of Eastern mystery religions and the relationship between politics and religion. In addition to the analysis of written historical sources, the studies rely on the results of archaeological, linguistic, art historical, and psychological research throughout. The interpretations, which combine philological thoroughness with extraordinary invention and exceptional insight, are now indispensable basic texts for research into the history of Roman religion. We are paying off an old debt of Hungarian book publishing by publishing this collection of studies. Only one independent volume has been published in his native language by Professor Thomas Köves-Zulauf, a deservedly world-famous researcher of Roman religion, born in Hungary (1923) and living abroad for the past six decades.
