Gene bank research to protect our old farm animals

Hungary also plays a decisive role at the international level in the conservation of farm animal genes, thanks to our natural endowments, the breeds of special genetic value native to the Carpathian Basin and our gene conservation specialists. We intend to further strengthen this status in the future. The main direction of the further development of gene conservation in Hungary is the establishment of a system of state gene banks, in co-operation with specialized institutions that have been carrying out the activity for several decades. Establishment and development of interlocking in vivo and in vitro gene banks preserved in living stock and under laboratory conditions, research and development of gene bank methods for the protection of indigenous, endangered species and rare species and varieties trapped outside the gene conservation system in a long-term, complex a research concept whose results contribute not only domestically but also internationally to the maintenance of biodiversity and ultimately diverse agricultural production. The Farm Animal Gene Conservation Center (HáGK) in Gödöllő and its staff, together with co-authors of renowned researchers, experts, practical gene conservation and rescue specialists from several specialized institutions and the Agricultural Magazine and Book Publisher, want to help achieve these goals. Therefore, we deal in detail with the theory of in vivo and in vitro gene conservation, the theoretical and practical gene bank work and research programs carried out by HÁGK and its partners, which are mainly related to poultry, but which are increasingly opening up new fields of research to in the pool and abroad. In compiling this volume, we have also kept in mind that the book should provide scientific and general knowledge about the great, albeit struggling work of our ancestors and our descendants, further developed by our ancestors and our descendants. with the same fearful care and professional conviction that we, the authors of the book, strive for!
