A forty-year-old woman with two children has been abandoned by her husband. She moves from state to state, unable to find a home. She takes a job as a music teacher at a school in Harlem, the poorest neighborhood in New York. Her enthusiasm far exceeds her experience. Overcoming initial difficulties, she has increasingly successful students.
